As part of the Year of English in Ukraine, the NGO GoGlobal has teamed up with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and together with Microsoft and other partners developed a new format of children’s school camps focusing on intensive study of English. The project is called GoCamps. The project team want to show children that learning languages can be easy and that summer camp can be fun.

Schools began sending their applications to participate in the project on February 17 and in total our team received 558 applications from 24 oblasts. The most active was the Volyn oblast with 49 applications! The Ivano-Frankivsk oblast came in a close second with 47applications, and Lviv followed with 41.

The winners were selected by an independent jury that included representatives of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, Microsoft, American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine and the GoGlobal team.

The main criteria used to select participating schools was quality of the creative assignment. The schools were free to choose any format they wished, but the most popular was video. Some were genuine masterpieces. There were also school presentations, appeals from school children, and even entire movies. The second criteria was the application form, in which schools had to describe their achievements, experience organizing events and projects in English, expected numbers of children attending the language camps, and other details.

As a result of the selection process, 117 schools from 20 oblasts will be given the status of GoCamps and more than 7,000 children will spend their summer vacations at a new generation of intensive English camps.
